We may or may not have gone overboard for Stephen’s birthday party…I tend to believe that we did NOT go overboard since we really enjoyed all the preparations involved. In fact, the preparations were almost as fun as the actual party!
Case in point: licking the green “Kryptonite” cupcake batter (yes, I let my kid eat raw eggs) is so much tastier than the actual cupcakes…

And stealing a cupcake while Mommy isn’t looking is way more fun than being given one legally.

Luckily, the pan had cooled off before the heist.

He managed to mangle three cupcakes before I discovered his sneakiness.
And then, some crazy mommy out there decided that Stephen needed a piñata for his party. Did you know if you go to Walmart to buy a piñata it will cost you $20???? Unreal! Hmmmm….somehow spending $20 on a paper box and spending $5-$10 more to fill it with candy only to have it all smashed to smithereens doesn’t appeal to me. So, I made one out of balloons, newspaper, masking tape, paper mache, spray paint, and a little tissue paper. Cost? Free-ninety-free! (Plus the candy and a little time). We had everything on hand except for the balloons which I got from my mom.

I had so much fun making this! I know piñata making isn’t for everyone but I truly enjoyed getting my hands dirty and working on this project throughout the week. It is one of those that you spend 30 minutes here and there working on it with a lot of time waiting for it to dry.

If you can’t tell, it is supposed to be a cloud with superman symbols showing through. Yeah, I figured out later how I could have the piñata in the shape of a superman symbol but the cloud worked just fine. The expression on Stephen’s face when he saw the finished product was worth every minute!

The other preparations for the party involved an afternoon spent sewing five child sized superman capes for party favors. Somehow, I missed taking a picture of the completed products all together, but you might catch glimpses of them in pictures from the party. The thought crossed my mind that it would be fun to make capes for the party and I immediately vetoed the idea because of cost. Then I came across some red fabric I already had and was actually planning to give away. I couldn’t resist – the result: three traditional red and yellow capes and two girly pink and purple capes.
I also made up a treasure hunt to lead Stephen to his last gift (too big to wrap). He helped with a treasure hunt once and LOVED it so I knew it would be a hit. Each clue mentioned a Superman villain, complete with pictures. I have to say that there are some really scary Superman villains! Just their names alone are gross and scary. The clues were much cuter printed out with fun fonts but here are a few:
Oh, no! The forces of evil have combined to hide Stephen’s last birthday gift! Help him as he follows the clues to find where the villains have taken it…
If you are the side that’s good look where we keep the cold food!
He’s tricked us again – drat that Lex Luther! He may have left a clue by the computer!
Atomic Skull has been here, no doubt. It seems it is time to look “without.”
